Mom’s Packing

13Behold, I stand here by the well of water; and the daughters of the men of the city come out to draw water:

14And let it come to pass, that the damsel to whom I shall say, Let down thy pitcher, I pray thee, that I may drink; and she shall say, Drink, and I will give thy camels drink also: let the same be she that thou hast appointed for thy servant Isaac; and thereby shall I know that thou hast shewed kindness unto my master. (Gen. 24:13-14, KJV)

A pastor received a call from a church that offered him a salary four times what he was then receiving. Being a devout man, he spent much time in prayer trying to packingdiscern what God wanted him to do. One day a friend met the pastor’s young son on the street. “Do you know what your dad is going to do?” he asked. “Well,” replied the lad, “Dad’s praying, but Mom’s packing!”

To know the will of God in our lives is not as easy as we wish it were. If you have ever struggled with knowing what God wants you to do after school, knowing whom God wants you to marry, knowing if you should take that job or this one, knowing what direction to take in your life, knowing what you want to say but not how or when to say it, then you know how difficult it sometimes is to discern God’s will for your life.

This story does not demonstrate the best way to make decisions in life, but this story does reveal a common dilemma that many people, including Christians, often face. The dilemma I am referring to is the problem of being sure that God is guiding us. In other words, how can you and I be certain that we are in God’s will and that the decisions we are making are the right ones?

We amble along in life, sometimes moving quickly and other times stumbling about trying to discover the right path to take. In order to know the will of God we need to be able to trust His instructions. Sometimes His way will seem unusual to us or even ridiculous at times. If right-pathwe are going to truly follow His path, then we must trust His ways even when they are different than ours.

I believe that God will direct our circumstances to guide us in the proper direction, even if it takes our wife loading up the paper cartons. Trust in His ways, and pray for His wisdom and rest assured in the path He leads.
